On Monday, October 9, 2006 at 10:15 a.m., U.S. Senator John Cornyn visited the AVANCE-Dallas program at Lorenzo de Zavala Elementary School in West Dallas.
Forty-five parents gave powerful testimonials to the senator during the hour about the difference AVANCE-Dallas is making in the lives of their families.
Senator Cornyn, now in his fourth year in office, was noticeably impressed with the AVANCE-Dallas program. As a father of two daughters, the Senator
understands the importance of education and how challenging and vital parenting is to establishing a foundation for success. He saw in AVANCE-Dallas a
place where Hispanic families incorporate effective changes into their lives. In his own words, Senator Cornyn concluded, “AVANCE is a great program.”

2006 Program Kicks Off
T

he eleventh AVANCE-Dallas program year began with excitement on August 21, when mothers with high expectations gathered for their first day of
AVANCE-Dallas classes, and little children walked into a new world of literacy with a vision for success.
The eleventh AVANCE-Dallas program year began with excitement on August 21, when mothers with high expectations gathered for their first day of
AVANCE-Dallas classes. 372 parents enrolled in the AVANCE-Dallas program this year, and these mothers talked about their hopes for their children,
dreamed of what their son or daughter might become, and believed they could make an impact on their future. They began the long road of becoming their
child’s first teacher from birth.
Meanwhile, during the first week, 458 infants and toddlers got a taste of a new world as they were exposed to books, blocks, and toys that stimulated
their young minds. They interacted with new faces, both of their teachers and fellow classmates, and caught a glimpse of the successful future they
could attain. They began a lifelong journey of learning—loving every moment of it.
This year AVANCE-Dallas has expanded the outreach of our program. We’ve opened a new site at Urban Park Elementary School in the Pleasant Grove area,
and added new ESL programs at our David G. Burnet and John F. Kennedy Elementary School sites. In addition, we’ve expanded the Texas Early Education
Model (TEEM) to six more AVANCE-Dallas locations.
Claudia Arango, a parent educator in Oak Cliff, is particularly excited about the parent community leadership projects this year. She says that the
parents are already very excited to learn how to be better parents and teachers to their children, and the leadership projects will provide an opportunity
for them to develop their skills not only in the home but also in the broader community.
Marisol Paniagua, a parent educator for the Bachman Lake area, adds that the addition of a fourth hour in the program has enabled the educators to
provide better service, specifically by facilitating interactive literacy activities (ILA), where parents and children read and work on literacy together.
Both the leadership projects and the ILA activities advance the lives of children through their first and most important teachers—their parents.
AVANCE-Dallas is all about children. If you love children, you will love AVANCE-Dallas because we devote ourselves to caring for children through a
two-generational program that strengthens their ability to achieve. Contact us today at 214-887-9907, ext. 105, to find out how you can help the next
generation today!
