Heather Weiss, Director of Harvard University's Family Research Project, says that parents and schools need to rethink “family engagement” and emphasize the involvement of parents and grandparents in children’s education. She points to Avance as a model in Texas that’s doing this effectively by instructing parents how to be their child’s first teacher. Kim Horner wrote an article in the Dallas Morning News, “Dallas-area services aim to help families prevent child abuse,” that spotlighted the Avance-Dallas Born Learning Program in Pleasant Grove, an intensified, two-year version of our core Parent-Child Education Program, funded in full by the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. 


April 16, 2010 
The editorial board of the Dallas Morning News posted an editorial, “Community Progress Starts with Parents,” and called on the Texas Legislature to increase funding for proven parent education programs like Avance-Dallas: 

“We also think it's time that Austin stepped up with more money for solid parenting programs, such as Avance. … The Legislature previously has put some money into this proven effort. As lawmakers prepare for a cash-strapped 2011 session, Avance and similar outreach programs belong higher on the agenda. It won't take hundreds of millions to make a difference with them.”

Press Release: We held our second annual Avance Reading Week on March 8–12, 2010. Nearly 600 excited Avance-Dallas moms walked into pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade public school classrooms and read to 10,267 children in five days, encouraging kids to love reading from an early age. 


November 12, 2009
The Dallas Morning News ran an article, written by Katherine Leal Unmuth, on the front page of the Metro section that discusses the critical importance of teaching Hispanic parents to provide an enriched learning environment in the home to their children. The article, “Dallas-Fort Worth programs helping Hispanic mothers find teaching moments,” featured Avance-Dallas as a premier model of effective parent-child education. 


October 11, 2009
The Zero to Five Funders’ Collaborative awarded Avance-Dallas a five-year grant to fully fund our Baby University Program at three sites in the high-need Bachman Lake region of Dallas. Robert Miller wrote a piece about the Collaborative’s new efforts titled,  “Dallas-area nonprofits target kindergartners’ language skills.”


November 2008 
The Zero to Three journal published an article co-authored by Jane M. Brotanek, Lisa Oglesby Rocha, and Glenn Flores, “Supporting Immigrant Family Strengths: Promoting Optimal Health, Health Care, and Child Development,” which features Avance-Dallas as a community-based program that successfully reduces disparities in Hispanic children’s health and development. 


April 2007
The Early Childhood Education Journal published an article that examines Avance-Dallas as a case study for effective outreach to at-risk Hispanic families, “Maternal Attitudes and Parent Education: How Immigrant Mothers Support Their Child’s Education Despite Their Own Low Levels of Education,” co-authored by Ana Schaller, Lisa Oglesby Rocha, and David Barshinger.
