Heather Weiss, Director
of Harvard University's Family Research Project, says that parents and schools
need to rethink “family engagement” and emphasize the involvement of parents
and grandparents in children’s education. She points to Avance as a model in Texas that’s doing this effectively by instructing
parents how to be their child’s first teacher. See William McKenzie’s condensed
interview, “Point
Person: Our Q&A with Harvard’s Heather Weiss.”

“Community
Progress Starts with Parents,” and called on the Texas Legislature to
increase funding for proven parent education programs like Avance-Dallas:
“We also think it's time that Austin stepped up
with more money for solid parenting programs, such as Avance. … The Legislature
previously has put some money into this proven effort. As lawmakers prepare for
a cash-strapped 2011 session, Avance and similar outreach programs belong
higher on the agenda. It won't take hundreds of millions to make a difference
with them.”
